Lady Renaissance

I know it's been awhile since I've last written here. Ironically, I've written a LOT of songs (about 15 to be exact) but I just decided to not post anymore of my stuff until its finished. I've got good news though. I'm gonna be working with this dude that lived in my dorm last year and we're gonna work on putting a mixtape together this year so *fingers crossed*.

Also, if you've been on my facebook, you would have noticed that I changed my name to Lady Renaissance. Why you ask? (Or if you didn't ask, I'm gonna tell you anyways). Well, there are several reasons:

(1) During a dinner after my eighth grade graduation, one of my teachers stood up RANDOMLY and decided to say a few words about me after I had won hella awards. One of the things he said that stuck with me was that he called me a "renaissance woman." I looked this up and discovered that its a person that is talented in many different arenas.
(2) Renaissance means "rebirth." I'ma change and rebirth the music game.
(3) In the 1920s and 1930s, the Harlem Renaissance occurred, which was the flourishing of Black writers, musicians, and artists in Harlem, New York, such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston.

Hence, Lady Renaissance is born...or reborn ;)

Nuyorican Poets Cafe

I stayed in New York last week for the Annual NAACP Convention, and while we were there, we made a pit-stop at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where apparently lyrical greats such as Mos Def and Common have performed. I performed my original piece "The Voice of Hip Hop" at the open mic. It's the start of something great! :)

Drake's "Best I Ever Had" video review

You've probably already seen this but Drake's music video for "Best I Ever Had" premiered yesterday I believe with none other than Kanye West directing it! So of course, we all had our expectations held high, right? Well, after watching the  vid, I was slightly disappointed. It seemed to be a bunch of breasts and basketball (but I guess it is meant to appease dudes right?). My friend came up with a possible metaphor for what the video is suppose to represent: supposedly basketball equals relationships.  Drake's team was full of beautiful girls who he expected to win because they were pretty, but they ended up losing to the ugly girls who actually knew how to play the game.  This is a very probable meaning, but I think it gets lost by the average viewer. What do you think of the video?

My first recording..."Shy Guy"

So I was bored today and decided to record one of my original pieces called "Shy Guy." Now, I did this off my Blackberry so it's hella old-school. Don't be expecting any pre-recorded backbeats lol.  Hell, it's damn near prehistoric lol.  I hope yall like it.

JEREMIH'S DEBUT ALBUM "JEREMIH" RELEASED TODAY!

Hey everybody! I've been waiting for weeks and finally the day has come...the release of Jeremih's debut album! I knew right after I heard his hit single "Birthday Sex," I would want to hear the entire album, but it was so hard for me to actually hear any of his other singles.  Then, "Raindrops" came out, and I was very disappointed.  I was worried that he was just going to be a one-hit wonder, but through a little investigation, I was able to download the majority of the album last night (I couldn't get it all...if downloading isn't your thing, you can always buy if off of iTunes for $7.99). And guess what? It's pretty good. I wouldn't call it amazing, but the songs are pretty cute.  He has a voice very similar to The Dream's so hopefully he will be able to distinguish himself well.  I kinda feel this will be his only major CD though...

"Break Up To Make Up" and "My Ride" are pretty good singles. Very pretty melodies. And he actually has some well thought out poetic phrases in "BUTMU".

I give this CD a.....6 out of 10.  It's worth the listen, so go out and BUY BUY BUY (or if you're like me, DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD)!
